By: Jay Broderick - Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll! There's a reason this moniker has lasted the test of time. I mean, it all goes hand in hand, doesn't it? Many (most??) artists have dabbled in 'mind-altering' in some form or fashion. Some to absolute excess, sadly cutting short lives with massive upside and potential. Others seem to hang on forever, despite the abuse they have (and continue to) put their bodies through. And of course it's not only musicians who fall into this. Many regular people fall victim to addiction. Perhaps the biggest culprit of all? Alcohol!

I know all too well the devastation this "drug" can inflict. As a young boy growing up in the suburbs of Toronto, I watched our family unit fall apart, mainly due to the struggles of an alcoholic father. And yes, it IS a struggle for those who suffer from the affliction, as well as the loved ones around them. The day my father left us was exhilarating, yet at the same time, it was the most devastating thing that ever happened to me in my short 9 year life (perhaps it still is). I'm not certain I saw him more than a handful of times after, yet I stood by his side and held his hand as he died from the dreaded "C". His specific kind? Esophageal. He passed 2 weeks after his diagnosis. The doctors said his disease was a result of excessive drinking and smoking.

So where am I going with this? This piece is not about the trials and tribulations of Jay's life, I promise. I simply use my experience as a footnote as to the potentials of alcohol misuse. Listen, I'm no saint! I've had my vast share of alcohol induced idiocy. Some that I'm completely ashamed of. Yet still, I love to have a cold beer while barbecuing, or a glass or 2 of great red wine. So I am in no way shaming anybody. But man, our society throws the "good times we can have with alcohol" down our throats, doesn't it? We can't go to a movie theatre anymore without a sweating can of Coors Light shining brightly in our faces when we go to buy popcorn. It has now become the norm. But what if the norm shifted? From a music standpoint, can you imagine going to a concert, and not being able to get a drink?

Well, that's exactly what the folks over at Reciprocity Music envisioned. With a dream to turn the "norm" on its head within the music industry, the management agency wants to shift the way live music is enjoyed. Specifically working with artists who want a gander experience for their stage, to give back, and create change, Reciprocity has engaged in a journey. All journey's need great partners, and so Reciprocity Music is thrilled to announce their partnership with live music promoter giants Live Nation.

"We are so excited to be partnering with Live Nation for the first ever large scale alcohol-free ecstatic dance event taking place at The Opera House in Toronto on June 18, 2025" Reciprocity representative Sage Daly shared with us. This evening of music will feature Guatemalan music producer and DJ Mose. While the vast majority of us feel the need to be in a different state, in order to make the music feel better, Mose has a drive to create a gathering of sound mind, in order to bring complete clarity to the event. It further allows for the music to take literal life, rather than becoming a shaken mess of noise. Even as Mose and his invited musicians resonate with their diverse sounds, they will completely go wherever the feelings take them, improvising along the way. In fact, even the vocals will take on their own life, with nobody knowing what will come next. The calm soberness will feel grand!

A live music event without alcohol... Who knew??? I for one never thought I would see the day. But this one resonates hard for me, and also appears to be a match made in heaven for Reciprocity. This ground breaking, momentous occasion will be like none other before it. It appears also that the concept is catching on. With a vastly growing listening audience, Mose has garnered 650 thousand Spotify listeners on the monthly, and his socials continue to grow alongside.

Is this truly a brand new doorway to live music experiences? Only time will tell, but it's about time somebody had the balls to be the first!
