Toronto, Canada - Toronto’s History played host to a stacked night of metalcore as the Spring Horizons Tour rolled into town, bringing together legacy giants August Burns Red and The Amity Affliction, alongside rising acts Boundaries and Heavensgate. Blending generations of the genre, the lineup felt like a collision between metalcore’s roots and its modern evolution, delivering a night that balanced nostalgia with forward momentum.

Heavensgate might still be one of the newer names coming out of Australia’s metalcore scene, but their live set proved they’re already building serious momentum. Leaning into a more modern sound compared to the metalcore of the 2000's, they brought a fresh energy that translated perfectly on stage. Vocalist Nazareth Tharratt was the clear standout, delivering the kind of intensity and chaotic physicality you expect at a metal show, with a performance that felt as engaging as the music itself.

Despite the band’s noticeably young appearance, they played with confidence and presence beyond their years. The lighting setup was minimal, but effective. Strobes and bursts of orange overhead light added just enough atmosphere without overwhelming the audience. Notably, Heavensgate performed with a single guitarist, a new but increasingly popular choice in the genre, and it didn’t leave their sound feeling empty. If anything, it made their set feel tighter and more focused. Overall, it was a high energy performance that hinted at a band on the verge of something bigger.

Boundaries

Boundaries delivered one of the most unforgettable opening sets I’ve seen in a long time. The kind that completely pulls you out of your body and drops you straight into the chaos. At one point, I got so caught up in the moment that I overstayed my welcome in the photo pit and was escorted out. Something that’s never happened to me before, but a testament to how immersive their performance was.

Every member of the band brought relentless energy, but the vocalist (Matt McDougal) stood on another level, combining raw intensity with serious vocal control in a way that’s rare to see live. For a band called "Boundaries", there was nothing contained about this set. The band was actively encouraging fans to push past the barricade. The atmosphere felt similar to bands like The Chariot or The Dillinger Escape Plan with constant motion and a sea of crowd surfers pouring over the barricade, easily more than I’ve seen from any opener.

Bassist Nathan Calcagno in particular, was impossible to ignore, with a performance that was as animated as it was tight. Watching it all unfold, part of me couldn’t help but wish I wasn’t there shooting, just so I could fully lose myself in the pit. If this set is any indication, Boundaries aren’t just another name on the bill... they’re a band that’s clearly on the rise!

August Burns Red

What can you really say about August Burns Red? You already know it’s going to be heavy, but they still manage to deliver something special every time. Having been a fan since 2008, this set felt like a throwback to those 2000's Warped Tour days, only now backed by a level of precision and tightness that shows just how seasoned they’ve become.

Vocalist Jake Luhrs was completely captivating, with a commanding presence and some of the strongest live vocals in metalcore, while the rest of the band matched that energy with flawless execution. The production added another layer entirely, with an LED wall cycling through surreal visuals, from green voids to rings of fire, alongside lasers and strobes that made the whole set feel immersive. A standout moment came during a drum solo performed by Matt Greiner, where each member joined in on floor toms, creating a powerful, rare live experience that you really don't see many bands doing nowadays.

Closing the night out, Jake initiated a massive wall of death that was such a spectacle to witness. More than anything, though, it felt like a band that genuinely wanted to be there. Engaging with fans, acknowledging photographers, and putting real intention behind every moment. For me, it was a full circle experience and easily one of the best sets I’ve seen in years.

The Amity Infliction

The Amity Affliction set brought a ton of energy from start to finish, backed by a lighting design that hit every cue perfectly and elevated the entire performance. Joel Birch's vocals carried this almost mysterious presence that pulled you in the longer you watched, adding a layer of intrigue to an already engaging set.

Having listened to these guys growing up, there was definitely a sense of nostalgia seeing them live again, and they delivered in all the right ways. Bassist Jonathan Reeves' clean vocals were a standout, cutting through with clarity and pitch perfect control that added real depth to the sound. Behind them, a mix of lasers and LED visuals surrounding the drummer created a dynamic, immersive backdrop that kept your eyes constantly moving.

As strong as their performance was, though, it was one of those nights where August Burns Red ultimately dominated the spotlight, but this was still a set that more than held its own.

As the Spring Horizons Tour continues beyond Toronto, it’s clear this lineup offers something for every era of metalcore fan. If this stop at History proved anything, it’s that the remaining dates are set to deliver the same level of intensity, connection, and unforgettable moments.
