The Spot Continues to Deliver Loud, Aggressive Shows in Newmarket

Newmarket, Ontario - The Spot in Newmarket continues to deliver loud, aggressive, one of a kind shows, and the lineup on Friday August 21st of Vile Decree, Hellseer and AAWKS was no exception. In fact, with this lineup everything was actually a little louder and definitely more aggressive.

AAWKS

Based out of Barrie Ontario, AAWKS hit the stage first. After speaking with drummer Randy Babic after the set, it turns out that the three piece I just witnessed deliver some of the doomest, sludgiest, death growl metal, was not in fact the full band and the bassist was just filling in for night. This blew my mind as the band’s set was tight with lead vocals provided by guitarist Kris Dzierzbicki reverberating through your entire skeleton. According to Babic, the band has been fluid at times with members even going so far as to invite anyone up who can play to jam along. Speaking of Babic, watching her behind the drums was almost mesmerizing! Her power was unreal and the way it appeared that she was conducting the band with each beat of the drum and crash of the cymbals was awesome.

Hellseer

Up next, local boys Hellseer. I’ve had the pleasure of covering Hellseer as well as lead singer Tyler Pratchett when he filled in as lead vocals for Incarnatus and as impressed as I was then, I was just as impressed Friday night. The band is just LOUD and Prachett’s aggressive and powerful delivery is unbelievable. He is able to command a stage as well as an audience, turning The Spot into his domain. With just a puff of his chest and a wave of his arm, Prachett was able to turn the small but loyal fans into a frenzied mosh pit. The band, Jon Tomlinson on guitar, Jackson Dart on drums and Noah Laidlaw on bass, had no problem backing Prachett’s evil intentions with heavy riffs and doom laden deep bass.

Vile Decree

With every show I see at The Spot, there is something new that amazes me. Lead singer of Vile Decree, the headlining act of the night, Paul Cavarzan was walking amongst the crowd before his set, and not knowing who he was, I kind of giggled to myself at the guy wearing floral Hawain style shorts whilst surrounded by people in varying degrees of black including fishnet stockings, Victorian dresses and corpse paint. The lights went down, Cavarzan hopped up on stage and let out the most vile death growl I have heard in a long time. From there he and the band tore into a short but deadly set that included a 30 second grind tune about his dog. Like Hellseer before them, Vile Decree turned the floor of The Spot into a spinning pit of flying feet and arms. Coming off stage, Cavarzan joined the mosh once or twice before returning to the stage to deliver more destruction.

I say it everytime time I do a write up for The Spot, we need more places like this and more importantly, we need to support places like this. Live music venues are getting rarer especially those who host bands like these. The Spot offers a place for established as well as up and coming bands to get up on stage and perform in front of an all ages, all inclusive fanbase that have a real love for hardcore music.
