By: Michael Drukarsh - As the decline of vinyl music was evident, independent record store owners came together and in 2008 the first official Record Store Day (RSD) took place on April 19th in Mountain View, California hosting a major kickoff with Metallica. Seen as a celebration of vinyl music and culture, RSD quickly spread across the U.S. and then globally was celebrated in independent record stores from as far away as the U.K. and of course right here in Canada.
Continuing the tradition of live music, giveaways, and special releases that are synonymous with RSD, Newmarket’s very own Wrong Way Records is hosting a free concert starting at 9 am featuring The Ravens Haven, Yellow Magnolia, The Lemon Pistols and Cigar Club.
Store manager Adam Rayfield and owner/general manager Ray Pelletier opened Wrong Way Records with the hopes of bringing a wide range of music, from iconic artists to local musicians, to the masses. With a line up of home grown talent taking the stage and delivering short and eclectic sets throughout the morning, both Pelletier and Rayfield are excited to introduce the town of Newmarket to some amazing home grown Canadian talent.

Along with the free concert, vinyl enthusiasts can expect to get their hands on some very special RSD releases featuring incredible Canadian talent. The official Canadian list includes; Honeymoon Suit The Singles on limited edition red vinyl, Joni Mitchell For the Roses on colour vinyl, Carly Rae Jepsen Disco Darling 7”, Tate McRare Hung Up on You on 7” and Good Kid Can We Hang Out Sometime?. A special release from Canadian icons The Tragically Hip is also expected.
What was meant as a means to hopefully slow the inevitable demise of the vinyl record is now a world wide event helping to not only support the medium (2025 saw a $2.1-$2.4 billion USD revenue), but artists of all ages and genres as well. 18 years after that first RSD in Mountain View California, bands like The Ravens Haven, Yellow Magnolia, The Lemon Pistols and Cigar Club are stepping into the spotlight just as Metallica did to help keep the culture alive and bring much needed music to the world.
