By: Jay Broderick - In June of 2023, LoudTO was an official sponsor for the Indie Night in Canada event that took place at the legendary El Mocambo. I was on hand that night to personally cover that amazing showcase of some of Canada's top independent musical artists. Of the 18 bands on hand, one of the standout acts for me that night was a thrash/punk crossover outfit from Barrie, Ontario named Spades GT.
In 2024, the Simcoe County Punks released their first full length entitled Sewer City Radio. As I reflect back, it was disappointing not to have shared my thoughts on the band's debut release, but I wasn't going to let the same happen the next time around. Now, in the middle of 2025, Spades GT is set to release their sophomore album United, and I'm super excited to give this one an advanced listen.

United
"Bashers, Misfits, Weirdos, Freaks"... it's a call to those who don't fit into the norms of society, and it's the call that starts Spades GT's newest album. The track? The aptly titled "Anthem". Drummer Tyler Reiner immediately provides a drum fill, and we're on our way as the strings provide a riff that hooks you 8 seconds in. The beat and rhythm for this record's first track is a prompt taste of the band's musical growth. Complete with modern music's sorely missed guitar solo, "Anthem" is just that! If you're on the outside of the social norm, prepare to be United!!
Speaking of being united, the album's title track takes up the number 2 spot on this 8 song recording. United's theme (the album) takes hold with this track as vocalist JD Pearce has had enough of "the man" being intent on tearing down society and dividing the populous. We get a real taste of Pearce's vocal style with its clear punk edge, and even the band joins in with accompanying "whoa ohs". With another guitar solo, am I seeing a trend? "United" was the first single released from the new album.
A heavy metal riff kicks off the second released single "Demons". This track has a fantastic, high tempo rhythm, despite the dark lyrics of a subject in turmoil. Feeling "broken from the start" and just so out of place, and not belonging is something many of us feel at some point in our lives. Unfortunately, some can't find the strength to battle the demons in their head. But for those in pain, believe that there is help. Reach out, and fight!!!
There's a million of them, but what was the last great song you heard about getting fucked up? It's been a while, right? Well, Spades GT has your elixir with "Wrecked". With a distinct Irish Punk groove ala The Dropkick Murphys or The Mahones, "Wrecked" gets the tempo ablazin' and prepares to punch you in the mouth. But purely all in good fun. This is my favourite track on a thus far outstanding record.

"Strong" is another standout track on United. The band has put together a killer collection of anthemic tracks, all complete with that metal, punk crossover gold. With "Strong" however, the band hits us with a new element. A hip hop verse from special guest rapper Mersinary from the Reel Wolf Pack strokes our inner ear's cilia at the 2:23 mark. Man, this fuses seamlessly with the track's beat, and energy. I literally just mentioned that "Wrecked" was my favourite track on this album, but I might have to revisit that proclamation.

Digital music doesn't usually come with the full sound of a vinyl record, but this digital copy sounds great! It is perfectly balanced, with clear distinction of the drums, guitars, bass and vocals. It's not something I typically make note of, but he production on this recording is fantastic.
Spades GT has put together an exceptional sophomore release with an important message for the political and social landscape we find ourselves in over the past 5-10 years. It's a record that just keeps getting better with each listen.
And you can celebrate the release with the band as they have their release party on July 5 at The Bovine!!
album release date: July 5, 2025
You forgot to credit the other vocalist on United! Matthew Voros did the chorus vocals on that song, as well as the lead vocals on Filthy Lie 🤘
