Jack White: G.O.D & the Broken Ribs

By: Mike Johnston - In another addition to Jack White’s ever expanding musical universe, this feels like an origin story.

While part of The White Stripes duo, he became instrumental in the garage rock movement of the early 2000s. White’s double single release earlier this April saw a return to form in both sound, and chart performance.

White’s diverse sound is hard to quantify, yet, “G.O.D and the Broken Ribs” feels like exactly that. Signature vocal distortions sprawl over an anthemic, tension filled rhythm, punctured by analog pops. White then throws his guitar solos at the listeners feet as if to ask, “what are you gonna do about it?”

“Derecho Demonico” follows the lead... but not the rhythm. Carried by wailing, heavily distorted guitar riffs, White reminds us not to get too comfortable. He also reminds us that even within the confines of a two song release, variation is key.

“G.O.D and the Broken Ribs” hit the UK Physical Singles chart in early April, debuting at #4. This matches a career high for White; last entering the Physical Single Top 5 in 2018, with “Connected by Love”.

The 12X Grammy Winner takes his show on the road this summer. Before heading overseas, White stops by Toronto’s RBC Amphitheatre, on July 14th.
