Richmond Hill, Canada - On March 7, 2026, the stage at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts in Richmond Hill, Ontario, hosted a night that blended soulful intimacy with the unmistakable energy of one of Canada’s most beloved alternative bands. With a heartfelt opening performance from Clerel and a vibrant, nostalgic set from Bedouin Soundclash, the evening felt both personal and celebratory.

Clerel opened the night with a voice that immediately commanded attention. Rich, soulful, and effortlessly expressive, his vocals filled the theatre and at times seemed to quiet the entire room. His rendition of “What I Like About You” carried a relaxed groove, allowing his smooth phrasing and warm tone to shine through.

One of the most memorable highlights of his set was “Le Tour,” a beautiful French song that reflected his Cameroonian/Francophone background. The melody was gentle and flowing, and hearing the lyrics in French added a layer of intimacy that drew the audience even closer into the performance. Clerel also gave the crowd a brief but powerful taste of “Try a Little Tenderness,” the classic soul anthem popularized by Otis Redding. Even in that short moment, his voice captured the emotional build and passion that make the song timeless.

When Bedouin Soundclash took the stage, the atmosphere shifted from reflective to electric. They opened with “Until We Burn,” off their 2007 album Street Gospels, a driving track that immediately set the tone for the night. The song’s pulsing rhythm and urgent energy felt like an invitation for the audience to settle into the band’s signature fusion of rock, reggae, and alternative influences.

The momentum continued with “Walls Fall Down,” whose upbeat rhythm and infectious chorus had the crowd visibly engaged. The song’s layered guitar and bass grooves created a warm, rhythmic pulse that filled the theater and encouraged the audience to sway along. By the time the unmistakable opening notes of “St. Andrews” arrived as the third song, a wave of recognition rippled through the room. The track’s laid-back reggae groove and melodic hooks made it one of those songs that feels instantly familiar and comforting when played live. The front row did not hesitate to get up and dance - how could you not?

Beyond the music, the band also took time to reflect on their history. Frontman Jay Malinowski spoke about how he first met bassist Eon Sinclair while moving into the same dorm at Queen's University in 2001. From that chance meeting grew a band determined to create something different - music that blended genres and gave Canada a fresh and distinctive sound. Musically, the performance was incredibly tight. Malinowski’s voice sounded remarkably true to the recordings - so precise that it sometimes felt like listening to the albums come to life right in front of the audience.

For me, the night carried an extra layer of meaning. Bedouin Soundclash was one of the bands that shaped my music taste when I first discovered them in high school. Hearing those songs live years later wasn’t just a concert, it felt like reconnecting with a soundtrack that helped define a part of my life. And judging by the crowd’s reaction, I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
