Newmarket, Ontario - As a band, you know you are doing something right when you watch a new patron enter the bar and instantly put their hands in the air and start singing along to the tune you’re playing. That is exactly what happened tonight at The Market Brewing Company as Floral Park were in the middle of their version of The Rolling Stones’ "Honky Tonk Woman". Not only were the harmonies beautiful, but the band, playing as a three-piece, found the groove that danced this newly arriving fan right to their table.

Playing a more intimate acoustic set, Floral Park, a local Newmarket band with Matt Deir on rhythm and Julian Antonini on lead guitar trading vocals backed by stand up (yes stand up) bass (NOT CELLO) player Rob Bourrie covered an eclectic range of music from the 1940s right through to modern tunes. Current drummer Andy Deir sat out this show, but will be joining them again next month when they play the Olde Village Free House in Newmarket.

Along with their amazing cover of "Honk Tonk Woman", Floral Park delivered a countryfied "Purple Rain" that no doubt had Prince smiling from above. In between songs, Antonini engaged in friendly banter with the crowd as the band decided which song to play from their wide repertoire.

Feeling the vibe from the room, Floral Park busted out some Merle Haggard and flowed right into a wicked bluegrass version of "Get Back". Although the band has three EPs and a newly released LP Forgotten Memoirs under their belt, tonight was an opportunity to have fun and play tunes that influence them and showcase the range that each member has. Antonini delivered some amazing solos while Deir’s voice suited every song to a tee and all the while Bourrie laid down the backbone, slapping, picking or bowing his stand up bass adding in some back vocals along the way. Floral Park’s ability to take on almost any tune from any genre and year and make it their own while staying true to the original vibe is a testament to their musicality.

Stay tuned to LoudTO as we will be showcasing Floral Park in an upcoming edition of LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT.
